When the Premier League kicked off in 1992 he was the only black African in it — a winger from Bulawayo at Coventry City, who scored a hat-trick at Anfield and captained Zimbabwe for a decade.
Peter Ndlovu joined Coventry City from Highlanders of Bulawayo in 1991, and when the Premier League began the following season he became the first black African footballer to play in it.
He spent six seasons at Coventry, and in March 1995 scored a hat-trick at Anfield — the first visiting player to do so against Liverpool in over thirty years. He went on to Birmingham City, Sheffield United and a long career in South Africa with Mamelodi Sundowns. He captained Zimbabwe, was for years its record scorer and most-capped player, and opened the door that every African player in England after him walked through.
