Thomas Mapfumo

born 1945

The Lion of Zimbabwe, and the inventor of chimurenga music

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Zimbabwe Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

He put the mbira into a rock band, invented chimurenga music, and used it against two governments in succession β€” the second of which drove him into exile.

Born in July 1945, Thomas Mapfumo is nicknamed the Lion of Zimbabwe for his popularity and for the political weight of his music.

His songs supported the liberation war and later turned sharply on the government of Robert Mugabe.
