Tererai Trent

born 1965

Married at eleven, and went on to a doctorate and a foundation

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Zimbabwe Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Married as a child with almost no schooling, she wrote her ambitions on a scrap of paper and buried it under a rock — then achieved all of them, and has since built schools across Zimbabwe.

Tererai Trent is a Zimbabwean-American humanitarian, educator and author who has consulted for major international aid organisations on programme and policy evaluation.

She took a master's degree in public health epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2013. In 2009 she founded the Tinogona Foundation, later Tererai Trent International, which has built a number of schools in Zimbabwe.
