Vice-president of ZANU from its founding, detained from 1964 alongside Nkomo, Sithole and Mugabe, and dead in prison in 1970 — reportedly for want of treatment for diabetes.
Leopold Takawira came up through the National Democratic Party and ZAPU before joining Ndabaningi Sithole's breakaway, and was appointed vice-president of the Zimbabwe African National Union on its founding.
He was detained in late 1964 and held at Sikombela and afterwards in prison, alongside Joshua Nkomo, Ndabaningi Sithole, Robert Mugabe and Edgar Tekere. He died in detention in 1970.
