Leonard Dembo

1959 – 1996

Chitekete, and the mastery of sungura

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Zimbabwe Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Chitekete sold over a hundred thousand copies and became the closest thing Zimbabwe has to a national love song. He was dead at thirty-seven.

Born Kwangwarai Gwaindepi in 1959, Leonard Dembo was a pioneer of the sungura genre, known for lead guitar and poetic Shona lyrics.

His 1991 record Chitekete sold over 100,000 copies and became a cultural phenomenon. Few musicians in Zimbabwean history have left as deep a mark.
