Raised in Harare. Eclipsed was the first play to open on Broadway with an all-Black, all-female cast and creative team; then she became Michonne, and then Okoye.
Danai Gurira was born in Grinnell, Iowa, on 14 February 1978 and moved to Harare with her family at the age of five.
As a playwright she wrote In the Continuum, which won an Obie, The Convert, which brought her a Whiting Award, Familiar, and Eclipsed — the first play to premiere on Broadway with an all-female, all-Black cast and creative team, in 2016. She played Michonne across ninety-six episodes of The Walking Dead and General Okoye in Black Panther and the Marvel films that followed.
