His first book won the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1979 and broke every convention of African writing at the time. He was dead at thirty-five and has never stopped being read.

Dambudzo Marechera won critical acclaim for The House of Hunger, a collection of stories giving a fierce account of life in Rhodesia under white rule.

Published in 1978, it won the Guardian Fiction Prize the following year.
