Collen Masimirembwa

born 1967

Pharmacogenetics of African populations

Distinguished is level 3 of 4 in the Zimbabwe Hall of Fame: sustained excellence over a career, widely honoured at home. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

His work established how differently African genomes handle medicines β€” a question the rest of the field had simply not been asking.

Collen Masimirembwa, born in 1967, is a Zimbabwean biomedical pharmacologist and president and chief scientific officer of the African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology.

His research has shaped pharmacogenetics in Africa, particularly the genetic diversity of African populations and how it affects their response to drugs.
